After the Paris 1924 Games, this sport was dropped from the programme, to return as demonstration sport in Los Angeles 1984. German, Steffi Graf won the ladies competition. Tennis was again included in official programme four years later in Seoul, Korea, where Miloslav Mečíř (former Czechoslovakia) and Steffi Graf (former West Germany) won gold in their respective singles tournaments.

The Tennis competition at London 2012 will be hosted on the Wimbledon grass courts, 104 years after London 1908 Olympic Games. That was golden era of Brittish tennis, Great Britain winning all six gold medals.
